A Russian strike on Kyiv on 12 October killed two people and injured at least nine, according to Ukrainian authorities. A 25-storey residential building in the Darnytskyi district was hit. Reuters reported, citing officials and President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, that one victim was found in a car near the building.

The attack was part of a wider pattern. Kharkiv reported damage to an apartment building and injuries; a drone attack in Lozova killed one person. Three more people were reported killed near Kramatorsk, with additional fatalities near Fastiv and in Dnipro.

Daily life under persistent threat

The burden on civilians is changing as attacks occur at different times of day rather than only in clearly defined overnight waves. Air alerts, drones and missiles interrupt work, schools and transport and put sustained pressure on emergency services and air defence.

Russia routinely says it targets military and military-industrial facilities. Damage to homes and civilian casualties are nevertheless repeatedly documented. Assessing the legality of an individual strike requires evidence about the target, weapon, foreseeable civilian harm and anticipated military advantage.

The latest attacks again underline Ukraine’s dependence on air defence. Interceptors can reduce casualties but cannot provide complete protection, particularly against ballistic missiles and large combined waves. Ukraine continues to request additional Western systems and interceptors.

Casualty figures remain provisional and may change as rescue operations continue.
