Russia attacked Kyiv with missiles again on Wednesday morning. Mayor Vitali Klitschko said at least one person was killed and another injured. Energy facilities in the Ukrainian capital were also hit.
The timing matters because US President Donald Trump announced an energy ceasefire between Russia and Ukraine at the weekend. Moscow has not publicly confirmed a documented agreement, and Ukraine has reported further strikes on energy targets since the announcement.
Winter raises the stakes
Russia has repeatedly targeted Ukraine’s energy infrastructure since 2022. As temperatures fall, electricity and heating failures can have consequences far beyond direct physical damage. Repair crews, air defence and decentralised backup power are therefore central to civilian resilience.
Reuters also reports that Trump says the United States is still sharing intelligence with Ukraine. Kyiv had complained that it did not receive usual warnings before recent ballistic missile attacks. Whether the intelligence flow has materially changed remains unclear publicly.
A ceasefire must ultimately be judged by verifiable conduct, not announcements. Continued Russian strikes on Ukrainian energy facilities contradict claims that a robust energy truce is already in effect.
